How to use the Catalogue

Welcome to UCSB! This catalog introduces you to many university offerings available to Santa Barbara schools and educators - all of them free. Our faculty and staff are pleased to present these programs for the enrichment of our community schools. Please refer to this catalog throughout the school year and share it with your fellow teachers. The programs range from classroom presentations suitable for kindergartners, to college prep workshops, to teacher seminars, fellowships, and competitions. Accordingly, the catalog is divided into two sections:

  1. Educational Resources. One-time presentations within your classroom.

  2. Teacher In-Service Resources & Other UCSB Educational Resources. This section includes teacher training seminars and professional development workshops, as well as programs offered on an ongoing basis by various departments throughout the university.

The Educational Resources section of this catalog offers a listing of UCSB faculty presentations, both in the classroom and on field trips, available to Santa Barbara area schools, from grades kindergarten through senior high school. Most of the programs offered in category 2 (Teacher In-Service Resources and Other UCSB Educational Resources) have firm dates, so do reserve those programs well in advance. Some of these programs refer you to other campus offices in most cases, so you may contact them directly.

Within the catalog, each listing gives the presentation title, the presenter's name, and intended grade level. A brief program description follows. Many of the presentations are flexible enough so that the presenter can adjust his or her focus to your curriculum. For example, Professor Michael O'Connell's entry, "Shakespeare," reads: "This presentation can be tailored to whatever play the students are studying." Professor O'Connell's presentation allows considerable flexibility: Is your class interested in a general discussion of an individual play, or do you wish to discuss a particular character or scene? Or would you like to discuss Shakespeare's world and the historical references he uses to bring his stories to life? Have a clear purpose in mind: How will the presentation enhance what you are teaching? To schedule your presentation, please fill out a request form. It is important that you apply early for your preferred program dates, because some professors have limited availability or may be on leave. Also note that when the university is between quarters, it is often a difficult time to schedule a presentation.

On the request form, please provide enough specific information so that the faculty member can develop a presentation that will work well with your course curriculum. Our office will contact the requested faculty member and serve as liaison between the requesting teacher and the presenter. If you should have questions, please telephone the Program Coordinator, Anthony Cadenas, at (805) 893-7970, or email at outreach@ltsc.ucsb.edu.

You may schedule as many faculty presenters as you wish throughout the course of the year. In addition, the Academic Outreach Program requests that you complete the Presentation Evaluation Form. Please return the information at your earliest convenience.
